"I miss the scene you get at a studio. Lots of hip people turning you onto bands and clubs and whatever shoes are cool at the moment. Its nice to be part of a group, to go to happy hour together, to make out with the temps, to keep up on trendy design. But at a firm you are turning out Design Product on an assembly line, you usually aren’t actually making your own design. You get direction from the Art Director who tells you the idea and then coaches the final product out of you. Or conversely if you are the Art Director you come up with an idea and tell someone else to make it. Whoever has their name on the door is working hard to bring in high dollar work in order to keep the machine running, which often means taking monied clients who don’t really want great design. Great design is risky. Many clients prefer simply good design, which is far lower risk. I tried having employees for a while, I was miserable. I became a bureaucrat, managing deals, managing people, managing payroll. I’m a designer, thats what I do. I used to think clients wanted a big firm, and in some instances they do, but in my case I’m selling Dan Stiles. They come to me for my design, not for the design of some poor kid attempting to decipher something I sketched on a napkin because I’m too busy filling out paperwork to do the work myself." –Dan Stiles

Close to a year of constant searching for a resale flat, we were rather relieved to have finally found our ideal home on april 25th. Good old grief it's finally over, believe me the search was a tough , torturous and time consuming one. Its at tampines st 42 blk 448, somehow a little away from the town centre which is not a bad thing too, the surroundings seem quiet and accessible. Its not the most ideal, but its the best we can afford considering the extorted prices the market is charging. I think the more we continue to wait the prices gonna escalate even more. The house seems bright, pleasant, clean and simple, trust me after close to a year of house visit, i know what's a good home. Anyway we were both happy with it which is the best thing. This is the beginning...of many great things to come.

My adolescent was once again revived on Mar the 16th. This was a band that i listen to but wasn't particular swapped away by the famous Nirvana lead grunge scene. i did take some notice in Dino Jr though. i was more curious with the British madchester indie scene. Still...the image of Priscilla (1969) taken from the book of photographs Almost Grown by Joseph Szabo for the album cover of GREEN MIND vividly engrained into my mind, that cover epitomized how the scene was gearing towards ; Generation X + alternative. I miss all those greasy long locks, baggy ragger jeans and our old torn converse shoes that we so used to emulate where the hype and fashion were skewing towards the music grudge scene back in the late 80s. So naturally when the gig was announced that Dino Jr gonna be here, my pals were all crazy about it. It's old skool days back again, not minding all the silly craze by the "scenester" a word make famous by my good pal Say about those new surfacing bands, cze this has to be one of those concerts we have to do it. Well, we did eventually, though the sounds wasn't exactly great on that day which i wasn't expecting from them either adding to J. Mascis listless and uninterested performance. This didn't make it to one of the top gigs for the last months. But i did felt that i can lay to rest "Without a Pain" now that i have finally seen them live.

A colleague got this coffee table book for xmas last yr. The Park (Hardcover) by Kohei Yoshiyuki. I first came across this book at a friend's house party and i was totally blown away by the nice black and white prints and also the idea of "liak gau". In chinese metaphor, it means "doing monkey business". Kohei Yoshiyuki pictures are taken using infrared film and flash in Japan's Shinjuku, Yoyogi and Aoyama Parks during the 1970s. Capture the illicit sexual encounters, both heterosexual and homosexual, that frequently occurred there under the cloak of darkness. The Park's images not only reveal hidden sexual exploits, but also uncover many spectators ardently lurking in the darkness, waiting to join in--and quickly raise issues of voyeurism and surveillance.

This book is worth every penny.

If wallets have legs i would totally be the first to admit that that is true. Like what i blogged yesterday about my little black wallet which was misplaced. Yes, it came walking back to me this afternoon, not that it really walks back but it was delivered to my door by my upstairs neighbour. I believed the founder actually hand delivered to my mail box. Knowing that my mail slot is locked the person smartly threw it into one of the units mail box's slot, hoping my neighbour would send it to me. True enough she did. I didn't even have the opportunity to thank her personally and she was just anxious to leave. Anyway i am glad that it is back. Everything were still inside except for the money and my EZ link card which were gone. Anyhow what's important is my identity card ($300 for replacement) and my beloved comme wallet. I wanna thank the auntie the next time i sees her. Never mind my cash and EZlink card, i am just happy that the founder finally return it back to me. Here's a quote by Rig Veda

I got no qualms that i rightfully deserve to lose my wallet. No one to blame except me for being careless, just last month i drop my keys in the cab and now. Sigh...plain forgetfulness and stupidity on my part. How can i keep losing things and why didn't i learn my lesson??? (No clue). I lost some cash, two credit cards and also three of my nets card plus my IC and company access card. But it was my wallet that meh bought for me for my birthday that i missed the most. I don't know where i lost it perhaps I place it on the bench while arranging my grocery in my tote bag with meh cause that was the last time i saw it. It was only when i needed to pay at the cashier that i realised it was gone. Shouldn't i be anxious, cursing, fucking and be extremely low in morale! No, i wasn't, I was as calm as a monk. I don't know why. Maybe it happen too often that i no longer felt scared. I just hope the person that found it would return it to me nevermind the valuable things just my wallet and identity card. Hopefully the founder believe in good karma like i do! fingers X

Two weeks ago i went for a nutrition talk at Takashimaya. At first i didn't wanted to make a morning trip all the way down to town on a weekend. But B insist LPN(Lao Pang Niang) and I should go with her. So we enrolled reluctantly, but at the end of the lesson, i realised it was indeed worth my 45 mins of train ride. I was totally blown away by the talk which was conducted in a empty yoga room. The nutritionist looks like a healthy yogi judging by her well toned arms and well verse in the poses and terms she mentioned about Yoga. And she doesn't look like she is trying to smoke us anyway. The basic structure of the lesson was circling around two forms of food that we consumes in our daily life. Acidic and alkaline food and how they are being categorized and what sort of food we should avoid and what we should have more. In fact it became a sudden realisation of how i really wanted to live a healthy lifestyle which i have been trying to achieve. I couldn't believe i have learnt so much within an hour not even when i was taking my geography or science class back in school. I went back and I did some research on the internet about those topics she mention during the class.

Now i have been religiously drinking vegetable juice with an empty stomach before i go to work in the early morning after my usual mug of honey lemon drink. ( Drinking honey and lemon-juice, an alkaline food, is highly beneficial in the treatment of obesity without the loss of energy and appetite and also this simple delicious tonic is an effective digestive and detox tonic.).

They call the juice ABC; Apple, Beetroot and Carrot. Beetroot is supposed to be the key component in the ingredients. A good source of vitamins (A, B and C) and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium). High in fibre. And it has antioxidant properties. Most importantly it helps to lower my uric acid level. Thank god i have finally found my "Superman drink" Looks like 7Eleven "slurpy" with the bright pink colour it looks appetizing to anyone.

Beetroot Make Us Happy? Recent research has declared beetroot a ‘mood’ food. Betaine found in beetroot is known to help us relax and make us feel good. Whilst recent press coverage has labelled it as a ‘sexy’ vegetable – containing high levels of the mineral boron which is thought to affect the production of sex hormones. This is my first time reviewing a band. Well I thought it would be nice to add some musical preference to my blog.

The Big Pink is an electro rock duo which formed in 2007 in London. The group consists of Robbie Furze (vocals, guitar) and Milo Cordello (keyboards, synths, vocals). I think The Big Pink is going to blow up. If not in America, in Europe. The reason: Dominos. That track carries the potential and was made to burn through stadiums. In April, 4AD issued the duo's first single for the label, "Velvet" which Pitchfork Media described as "undeniably immense", but it's a tribute to the Big Pink's skill and maturity that it still manages to sound intimate," and awarded the track a 7 out of 10 rating. This London duo uses gritty beats, droning guitars, abstract effects and dreamy vocals to create a soundscape that is arty yet tuneful and catchy. Also check out "Too Young to Love"(my personal fav) and "Crystal Vision"

Jie told me before ah mah was a belle of the kampong and there were queues waiting to match make her. And why she got married to my dad was indeed a mystery. Years later when i accidentally came across a black and white wedding picture in the wooden drawer. I was finally convinced she was indeed charming and stunning. She was dressed in a white gown and you can tell she had a good porcelain like complexion then. She was tall and elegant. She came close looking like an old antique shanghainese poster gal u see selling at local flea market. Everything belies what she is now. Though she has lost most of her charm (she still has very little winkles around her eyes). She still my gorgeous ah mah.

Back then in the 70s and 80s where we were all still living in kampong Bugis (now known as Kallang Park). Life was hard, together with my 6 other siblings and ah mah, we were all squeezing in a three room wooden attap house. When i was small, Ah pah was working as a seaman, i guess he was already in his late 50s when ah mah gives birth to me yah i was really a late bloomer. Anyway, I seldom get to see him and he hardly talks to me when i was a kid. He is like a typical "Man of the House". Quiet and stern. He only comes back once or twice every few months. I hardly remembers how he looks when i was small. At times he would stay about a week or two and he's off again. Jie said that ah pah is a foreman on the ships. Till this day i still don't know what exactly is his job. He is now 86 years old. He fell down few years back and broke his hip bones and he is now on clutches He has also turned senile these couple of years and act like a kid. At times you feel like scolding him but he looks so adorable.

I was first introduced to Fantastic man by my editor and fashion director telling me how good this magazine really is. Well as usual i didnt take a fancy of anything other than what i already like. My fashion editor bought an extra copy and left it for me on my desk. I brought home and i read it... oh my god i was a change man. (haha no lah i was just joking) but indeed it was a total revelation and it was love at first sight. Fantastic Man is the brainchild of designer Jop van Bennekom and journalist Gert Jonkers. The layout is clean with Modernist influences but has enough idiosyncrasies to steer it away from sterility. Bennekom even revives Times New Roman in a way that makes me regret telling you how unfortunate a typeface it is.Combined with original photography and alternative fashion, this might be the most substantive fashion magazine ever.

Like anything cool, Fantastic Man’s hard to find. To date i have only got the one copy my FD gave me.

Went to Kinokuniya today to have a quick browse but i didn't buy. Yah i'm very cheapo. I will wait for tomo, meh got Kino card so we can get a bit of discount. Published under Penguin, the book weighs 1.8 pounds size is 7 x 5.1 x 1.6 inches and contents 512pp of gorgeous man, ladies and even kids. From the streets of Paris to Milan, Stockholm to New York, these are the people that have inspired Scott and in turn, inspired designers and people of all ages, wages and nationalities with an interest in fashion will like this. I have always liked warhol for inspiring me to take up silk screen printing ever since i pick up a warhol book back in my school days. In this book there are tons of images and documents that cover the many subjects that made up the life of the very influential Andy Warhol. Rich in ephemera (Warhol never threw anything out), photos, letters, illustrations, essays, this book provides the ultimate lap-crushing coffee table biography. One more to my collection.

If you are still staying with your parents chances of the skeptic minds will always classify you as being a mummy's boy or girl. And they will hardly take you seriously. Its awful being labelled a kid. Yes i m a 30 plus grown up man that still stayed with my parents. Yes i have nice and delicious home cooked food waiting for me everyday after a tiring day at work. And yes, my maid still washes my undies without even me telling her so...so fucking what. I m a home boy and you are right i m a typical cancerian who feels warmer at home. Going by all these years getting a flat hasn't really cross my mind till now. Alright you can call me Mr Slow or Mr.Ignorant if you want to compare me to my fellow peers.

Rightfully when u decide to settle down, the "nature cycle" here in singapore context is to get ROM and get a fucking flat. Because the process of waiting for a house takes approximately 3 to 4 years.

Couples tend to use buying a house as a cheap excuse. I have a friend who uses that to propose to her now defunct wife. Which i find is uncharacteristic and totally unromantic, well that's so singaporean, what can i say. Which comes back to the point. "House". I would say that's a real huge commitment you have to take. Our "law" has always encourage a couple to get settled down and have kids much to the amaze that a normal 4 or 5 room flats can cost nearly 350 to 400k for a resale. As what i see, that will in turn drain us dry once our signature is on the dotted line be it a new flat or resale. Houses in singapore are too expensive and the living standard as well. Not forgetting the process of looking for a flat is much more tiring than me working on my monthly magazine. Weekends are spend hunting. i have viewed nearly 20 plus units still i have yet to agree on terms. Most of the time competing with others ( mostly indians, dont ask me why?)Viewing houses is like house warming party. Agents are aggressive and buyers are like a bidding war on ebay. So fucking kiasu, I supposed if you snooze, you lose. I have never quite understand the need to house hunt, maybe i was never old enough to understand all this while but now i think i do.

i took almost a month to upload this bunch of pixs . Nothing great, just street shots. I thought everything in these pix were ordinary and at times stupid. Sign boards that i can't even read. The hostile nature of the Hongkees.I got constantly "snapped" for snapping them. The PRC are everywhere. The foggy Victoria Peak that looks like i am walking back into Tim Burton's movie's. The wanton mee's wanton looks bigger than my balls. Chou Tau Fu makes me wanna puke and the smelly backlanes of stanley street looks sad and worn down in central. But on my way back, i realised i actually do like HK for the authenticity nature of their own original livelihood without even knowing it. Raw, robust and conjested but full with character. Yah i guess i really do!

My Bloody Sunday

Its a promise i made last year to go for blood donation, but each time i didn't keep my promise. I don't want to find lazy excuses for it. I feel guilty everytime i missed one. Anyway, i was finally there yesterday with Meh at Dhoby Ghaut Mrt station where there was a booth set up for donors.
My palms were sweaty. Going thru all those questionaire and screening took almost an hour. Did u know u will get fined $20 000 for giving false information,if they found out that you have aids after the test. I didn't know that. Well, the actual process of the blood transfusion was much faster than i thought. I was a little tensed considering its my first time doing it. I even got a little sticker on my chest which says, "Be nice to me, its my first time." There was a pinch of pain but i soon got over it. Seeing the blood rushing thru the tube and into the bag was amazing. Its like telling them go, go save the life that needed you more. So feeling hor... Very soon the whole bag like the size of your palm was filled. i was bandaged up with printed smiley face on it and i was asked to take a rest with refreshments of milo and biscuits. I felt a sense of satisfaction after that. What's fulfilling wasn't the pack of biscuits nor the packet of milo i drank but the joy of saving the unfortunate. Its well worth it!

6.30am i am ready to hit the road with my nike+ nano. I have been rigourously running on alternate days for close to a week now. i have a goal on my list, to run 100km in 3 months is just a start. I don't know what got into me for doing that but i'm truly loving it. The fresh cool air. The scents from the nearby frangipani trees. The cold starts to the day that slowly warms my body. The gray, empty souless streets before dawn. Everything seems like a passing motion much like watching MTV with my Ipod nano playing.
